Hernando Excel by 5 participated in the Hernando Fire and Life Safety Day on Saturday, May 4th from 1-5 p.m. at Hernando Fire Station 2. This is the 8th year for this event designed to help improve fire and general life safety for families in Hernando. In addition to our game of bean bag toss which netted the participants a free library book (and the parents info about Excel by 5), the event included the distribution of free bicycle helmets and bike safety tips for kids. Hernando has a mandatory helmet ordinance for youth. In addition the event included a fire safety trailer and classes, Entergy Arcs and Sparks Demo, fire extinguisher simulator, rescue tool demo by Hernando firefighters (the mayor was the “injured” motorist!), a demonstration by the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks & US Army Corps of Engineers at Arkabutla Lake, child ID, MDOT seat belt simulator, and an appearance by The Wing Air Evac helicopter.
