Hernando Mayor Chip Johnson read a story, and then helped Excel by 5 Co-Certification Manager Victoria Penny distribute book bags to children at Hernando Head Start when the First Regional Library BookWagon visited the center on May Day. Each bag contained a copy of the book Tops and Bottoms, a child-sized shovel, and information about the Summer Library Program, the Hernando Community Garden, and the Hernando Farmers Market. The book bags were made possible by a Target Early Literacy Grant and a partnership between First Regional Library and the City of Hernando. The theme was “Plant the Seeds of Reading” to encourage early literacy, healthy eating, and involvement in the community garden!
Bags are also being distributed this month to children at Hernando Baptist Preschool & Kindergarten, Hernando United Methodist Preschool, and DeSoto Development Center.
